Chapter Ten

“You’re lucky that I’m here,” Casanova replied. “The chief was going to send the whole team down to get you, and I managed to convince him that it would be better if I just came to get you.”

“Get me for what?” Monty asked. By now, she was so exhausted that she could feel her eyelids drooping and she wondered if she would even be able to stay awake for whatever this situation was.

“You didn’t know?” Casanova asked, looking at her closely. “Someone called and reported you. The gig is up. Everyone knows that you are behind the mall burglaries.”

“I’m not,” Monty said, surprised that it was so easy to believe that she was behind the theft.

“A man called in a couple of hours,” Casanova replied. “He said that he had witnessed you driving to the mall almost every morning. He claimed that he saw you walking by the trucks, and he even said that he saw you taking a taxi so you could get away from the burglary that occurred a couple of hours ago. There are others that can back him up. In fact, I looked at the security cameras quite a few times, and your vehicle is on there.”

“Of course it is,” Monty said. “I have been dropping my girlfriend off there every morning. I thought she worked there. Turns out, I was wrong.”

“What do you mean?” Casanova asked. “How do you not know where your girlfriend works? Why wouldn’t you ask her why she needed to go to the mall every morning, especially when there is an active case regarding that venue? Are you an accomplice, Perez? Really, just let me know now. After the whole thing with Yates, nothing would surprise me at this point.”

“I’m not an accomplice,” Monty retorted. “In fact, I haven’t even been inside the mall for a while. I just go there to drop off Jewel before work, and if someone saw me by the trucks, they were wrong. She is always insistent in going inside by herself. I figured she was nervous about being seen with a cop. She’s a bit younger than me, and dating a cop probably isn’t what the cool kids are doing these days.”

“Damn, Perez,” Casanova scolded. “First, you tell me you are dating a potential suspect and then, you tell me she’s young. How young are we talking?”

“Twenty-nine,” Monty replied.

“Shit, you almost gave me a heart attack,” Casanova said. “I was thinking she was eighteen or something.”

“No,” Monty laughed. “That would be way too young.”

Casanova shook her head and the two were quiet for a moment. “Do you have an alibi for where you were tonight? Is there anyone that could vouch for you?”

“Yes,” Monty replied. “Iggy at the downtown bar.”

“The lesbian bar?” Casanova asked.

“Yes,” Monty said, surprised that the other woman knew which bar she was talking about without needing further explanation. “Are you familiar with the place?”

“Very,” Casanova replied. “And I know Iggy. I’ll text her right now. That might help you clear your name, but I’m not sure that it’s going to do anything for your little female pal.
